Behind ANIMO
I'm Norbert Béleczki, the author and creator of ANIMO. I'm a primary teacher with a degree in Environmental Science, and both education and my long-standing interest in the natural world have shaped the way I approach these stories. I want children not only to learn facts about nature, but to become curious about how the living world works.
ANIMO grew from a simple idea — that understanding connections matters. A whale can be affected by something happening far beyond what a child can see beneath the surface; a small garden can support an extraordinary web of life; and everyday human choices can have consequences that travel through an ecosystem.
Through the books, activity books and free resources, I hope to encourage children to observe closely, ask questions, make connections and think about possible solutions rather than simply being told what the “right” answer is.
The free resources are part of that same aim. They are designed to give families and schools simple ways to take ANIMO beyond the story — whether that means investigating a coastline, looking for living things outdoors or simply stopping to notice something that might otherwise have been overlooked.
My curiosity about the natural world began in childhood and has stayed with me ever since. Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to experience some extraordinary places and encounters with wildlife. Here are a few moments from those journeys.
But you don't need to travel to extraordinary places to discover the wonders of nature.
An ordinary garden, a patch of grass or even a few plants on a balcony high above a busy city can reveal a surprising world of life.
Sometimes the most remarkable discoveries begin simply by looking a little closer.
